The physical aspect of les Lilas is particularly appealing – the front doors face east and windows in the adjacent wall face south.
At the turn of the century, the floor level of the barn which now accommodates les Lilas and l’Orangerie was lowered by 1m to accommodate the two guest rooms. The material removed was 50% rock which was used to reinforce the river bank, and 50% fine material which was used to consolidate the bog which is today the car park. The excavated floor contained strata of flour and earth which were regrettably not analysed at the time. Consequently the various types of grain milled at le Moulin du Chemin at different periods of history remains unknown.

In former times the building included a granary – a floor where grain was stored during winter for planting in spring. The miller at le Moulin du Chemin was also a farmer. The stored grain gave the added advantage of providing winter-insulation to the floor below.

The trails leading from le Moulin du Chemin into the surrounding countryside are, of course, also available to guests.

A picturesque stream runs beside the property. The stream has been nurtured and is maintained by the local fishing federation as a trout hatchery.

Some of the adjacent paddocks and woods belong to le Moulin du Chemin. The stream flows through one of the paddocks and is home to a variety damselflies and dragonflies in summer. The whole property and surrounding countryside abounds with a wonderful variety of wild flowers, birds, butterflies as well as small, and not so small, mammals and other fauna.

Le Moulin du Chemin and local farmers are party to a charter for the preservation of the watercourse in its natural state. The charter also includes an undertaking not to use pesticides and herbicides on land adjacent to the watercourse and to minimise removal of natural growth from the banks to encourage habitat for aquatic and land plants and animals.
